In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling hills, lived a shepherd boy. His being was untarnished, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to tend to his herd of sheep.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the gales across the single tree on the peak were his constant associates. Day in day, looking out for his charges instilled in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. In one such instance because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome scheme.
Stories of wild beasts prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a prank on the here villagers.
One day he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but saw no beast.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This trick continued for a couple of more days. But, one morning, a real wolf did come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is hard to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
